Ancient Sudan

Ancient Sudan: Enduring Heritage was a touring exhibition for the British Museum that introduced audiences to Sudan’s rich cultural history, centred on the Kingdom of Kush, while responding to the contemporary threat posed to heritage by the ongoing conflict in the region. Designmap delivered a complete, flexible exhibition design adaptable to two contrasting venues. The exhibition combined seven key objects from the British Museum with local loans and works created through community workshops with members of the Sudanese diaspora, creating a layered, multi-perspective narrative.

A distinctive graphic identity inspired by the woven structure of a Sudanese tabak basket unified the tour across different spaces and formats. Widely reviewed, the exhibition was praised for its emotional impact, collaborative approach, and ability to connect ancient civilisation with urgent present-day realities.
