Following our work on Monsters of the Deep and Pirates, Designmap was commissioned to redisplay and reinterpret the National Small Boat Collection within the dramatic four-storey Boat Hall at National Maritime Museum Cornwall. The project brought together 25 suspended and floor-based boats, each exploring themes such as survival, migration, exploration and speed.
We developed a fully integrated spatial, interpretive and lighting strategy, supported by detailed 3D modelling to choreograph the boats within the vast volume of the space. Bespoke mobile cradles allowed floor-displayed boats to be safely reconfigured for events, while digital interactives on the first-floor gallery enabled visitors to explore the suspended flotilla overhead. A flexible RGB lighting scheme enhances both everyday visitor experience and seasonal programming.
