Designmap was appointed as lead designer for the new Stourbridge Glass Museum — a major cultural project celebrating the extraordinary history of glassmaking in the Black Country and the continuing innovation of contemporary glass artists today.
Our role encompassed showcase design, 3D spatial design, graphic interpretation and digital media concept design across the museum’s permanent galleries and temporary exhibition spaces. The ground floor houses the British Glass Foundation Collection and was conceived as a dark, atmospheric environment, allowing the richness, colour and luminosity of the historic glass collection to emerge dramatically from the surrounding space. Carefully controlled lighting, layered interpretation and immersive media combine to create a strong sense of discovery and craft heritage.
In contrast, the first floor provides a lighter, more flexible gallery environment dedicated to contemporary glass and changing exhibitions.
Alongside extensive object display, we developed a series of physical and digital interactives exploring the processes of glassmaking, the industrial history of Stourbridge, and the stories of the people who shaped the region’s global reputation for glass production.
Since opening, the museum has received significant recognition and award success, establishing itself as an important new destination for glass heritage and contemporary craft.
